Sauerbraten

2 lbs beef cubes
2 T fat
1 envelope brown gravy
3 cups water
small cubed onion
3 T vinegar
3 T brown sugar
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
3/4 tsp ginger
1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire
1 bay leaf
5 potatoes
6 carrots

Cut meat into 1" cubes and brown in fat in deep pan.  Remove meat, add gravy mix and water.  Bring to boil, stirring constantly.  Add onion, vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, ginger, Worcestershire, and bay leaf.  Return meat to pan, cover and simmer 45 minutes.  Cut potatoes in half and add remaining carrots.  Turn to high heat for 10 minutes.  Then turn to low and cook slowly for about 1 hour.
